Description:

"The Boys" is part of "The Old Quilt Series." The title refers to my two tom kitties, Handsome and his little brother, Tommy Lee. To this day these two full-grown tomcats are still napping buddies.

"The Old Quilt "series was inspired by my love of quilts. There is something irresistible about a softly worn old quilt. The way it’s faded colors and worn edges hint at sweet memories. Like being used as a play mat on the floor for the new baby, or draped across Grandma’s lap on a chilly evening, or the time we used it as children to make a tent. Or the countless times Mom threw it in the back of the station wagon for us kids at the drive-in movies. I love the old handmade quilts and still hang onto them like old friends, long after they are worn out.

This painting was molded with a single piece of canvas glued over an existing stretched canvas. This is a time-consuming process, all done by hand, but I love the end result. I kept the painting of Tommy Lee very loose, to keep the effect from looking too life like. I noticed that as I was adding the painted softening effects to the quilt, it was looking so soft and comfy, that I was starting to get sleepy myself. I had to go lay down and take a nap before I could finish the painting. 

This 3-D molded canvas process might appear fragile, but it is not. In fact it is amazingly resilient and tough. It looks soft, but the multiple layers of gesso and paint make the canvas very stiff.
