Description: |
"The Mountains are Sleeping Series" was inspired by an idea that I had while driving back from my parents home, in Colorado. The mountains looked so ancient and in a way, almost feminine. The biggest challenge is changing my thought pattern back and forth, between painting a woman and painting mountains. Keeping the female form soft, while keeping the texture and colors rugged, stark and and rock-like. My other challenge is finding women friends willing to strip down to their undies, and pose for reference photos. Most of my friends are older, and too self conscious about their bodies. I had to resort to setting my camera on self timer mode, leaping quickly to the sofa, and then trying to pose my limbs in mountain peaks positions. What an artist won't do for their art. When viewed up-close, the painting comes alive with texture. No matter the angle of viewing, the texture is apparent. The combination of recycled plastic, canvas, glue, and finally, colorful acrylic paint is my own original technique and design. This texture is even more amazing when viewed under dimmed lights. The play of shadows makes it take on a whole new life. The canvas requires extensive preparation before the painting can begin. This is not something that can be rushed. This process is one that I have developed over a long period of time. Creating these paintings is not a simple process, but it is enjoyable and I love how it keeps evolving. I love the way these pieces look. They always get noticed and commented on in my studio. |
