Description: |
"Lava Tubes" is another example of my Molded Canvas technique. The title refers to my artistic interpretation of the lava tubes seen in Hawaii. This is an interesting piece, and a real conversation starter. The first layer of canvas is mounted to the hand made frame in the traditional manner. Then a second layer is tediously glued to the first, using foam padding. I finished stapling the second layer on three sides, when the idea of leaving the 4th side loose occurred to me. It just looked so good leaving it loose. It can't go anywhere as the whole thing is glued to the first layer. It can't unravel, as there are too many layers of gesso and paint on it. I made a special wood piece for the backside of the loose edge. Not to support it, but to protect it during shipping. I applied some special texturing, and then the whole thing got 4 coats of gesso, (because I kept changing my mind about the base color.) Then I started putting the colors on. The red is molten lava, the blue represents sea water, that has pushed it's way into a hollow tube. This 3-D molded canvas process might appear fragile, but it is not. In fact it is amazingly resilient and tough. It looks soft, but the multiple layers of gesso and paint make the canvas very stiff. |
